TV Comic Annual   (1951)
Search for 'TV Comic Annual' on eBay

Publisher: TV Publications, Ltd.

Publication Date: Annual 1951 - Annual 1984

Country: United States

Language: English

While it is the general policy in this database to include annuals as a part of the main run of a publication, British annuals are a bit of an exception. Unlike American annuals, British annuals, especially of the mid-late 20th century, tended to be quite clearly distinct from the parent publication. They were almost always hardcover and, though they may have used common characters, they typically shared no continuity whatsoever with the parent publication. They were, in fact, entirely standalone issues, produced merely to generate additional Christmastime sales.

The TV Comic Annual was no exception. While the nature of the main TV Comic was such that continuity didn't matter too much, the stories in the annuals were particularly forgettable one-offs.

A word about dates
The TV Comic Annual was published sometime at the very end of the third quarter in any year (generally around the end of August), so that the publication would be in stores for Christmas. As the initial reason for entering this publication into the database was to track the Doctor Who material included in these anthologies, it's not currently clear exactly when the first and last Annuals were published. Thus, a temporary begin and end year have been entered, matching the first and last years that TV Comic itself was available. If you know when the first and last issues of this publication occurred, please feel free to change the begin and end date.

Like all UK Annuals, the year given for any annual is the year following actual publication. Hence, the "1966 Annual" would have been published in August/September 1965. This explains the phenomenon of the First Doctor appearing in the 1967 Annual, even though William Hartnell left the role of the Doctor early in the 1966 television season.
