Bio:
The enormous popularity in the X-Men eventually led to calls for a second team. Chris Claremont and Bob McLeod answered in 1982 with an entirely new group of young students called the New Mutants. Much like the international of X-Men before them, the teenagers hailed from different cultures around the world. Louise Simonson carried the New Mutants into the 90s before Rob Liefeld transformed the team into X-Force.

Original Team: Four of the five original New Mutants made their debut in Marvel Graphic Novel #4 (1982). Xi’an Coy Mahn (Karma) appeared earlier as a reluctant villain in Marvel Team-Up #100 (Dec 1980). Xi’an is also the first to leave the team under mysterious circumstances only to return (again as a reluctant villain). The remaining four students continue to play important roles throughout the team’s history.

  • Headmaster: Professor X

  • Cannonball

  • Karma

  • Psyche

  • Sunspot

  • Wolfsbane

New Students: Chris Claremont expanded the New Mutants in 1984 by introducing three new characters and adding a long-time X-Men supporting regular to the student roster. Amara Aquilla (Magma) joined the team New Mutants #12 (Feb 1984) with both Doug Ramsey (Cypher) and the alien Warlock following in New Mutants #21 (Nov 1984). Illyana Rasputin (Magik) was already an established figure in X-Men stories by the time she showed up in New Mutants #14 (Apr 1984). She first appeared with her older brother, Colossus, in Giant Sized X-Men #1 (May 1975) but gained prominence in her own right when she returned from a brief trip into Limbo years older and a Sorceress Supreme. Xi’an Coy Manh (Karma) returned to the school after a being freed from the evil influence of the Shadow King but was often excluded from the stories (presumably to care for her younger siblings). Her brother and sister were kidnapped during the Mutant Massacre forcing her to eventually leave the team to search for them.

  • Headmaster: Professor X

  • Headmaster: Magneto

  • Cannonball

  • Cypher

  • Karma

  • Magik

  • Magma

  • Mirage (formerly known as Psyche)

  • Sunspot

  • Warlock

  • Wolfsbane

NOTE: This lineup reflects the members and roster most commonly associated with the New Mutants.

In-Between Years: Louise Simonson modified the roster slowly over the next two years. Additions were temporary. The teenagers adopted Birdbrain for several issues (New Mutants #56 - #61) and traveled with the alien Gosamyr for a time (New Mutants #67 – #75). Neither actually became “official” members of the team but are often associated since both were part of big crossover stories (“Fall of the Mutants” and “Inferno” respectively). This period brought much bigger changes as members depart in dramatic fashions. Amara Aquilla (Magma) left early in the run to join the Hellions while Illyana Rasputin (Magik) returned to her natural age (7) at the end of Inferno. The most controversial event, however, was the surprising murder of Doug Ramsey (Cypher). He died a hero taking a bullet meant for teammate Rahne Sinclair (Wolfsbane).

  • Bird Brain (friend)

  • Cannonball

  • Cypher

  • Gosamyr (friend)

X-Terminators: Louise Simonson shakes up the roster by incorporating the other young mutant group found in the X-titles. Magneto returns to his villainous roots (New Mutants #75) leaving the students without a headmaster. The team quickly connects with their newfound friends, the adventurous wards of X-Factor (New Mutants #76). Boom Boom and Rictor join the team for a journey into Asgard while Rusty and Skids are separated becoming prisoners of Freedom Force.
