Bio:
The New Mutants needed adversaries closer to their own age, so in 1984, Chris Claremont and Sal Buscema introduced the adventuring teenagers to the Hellions. Brought together and funded by the Hellfire Club, the Hellions served more as a school rival than as future villains. The White Queen (Emma Frost) opened the doors of the Massachusetts Academy to secretly groom and train the team. She originally treated the students as an investment for the future, but her eventual commitment and love became clearly evident when she learned of their ultimate fate.

Original Team: When the Hellions first appeared in New Mutants #16 (Jun 1984), they closely mirrored the New Mutants in both powers and the international membership. The team regularly served as antagonists, but only Empath showed any signs of actually being “evil”.

  • Catseye (opposite Wolfsbane)

  • Empath (opposite Karma)

  • Jetstream (opposite Cannonball)

  • Roulette

  • Tarot (opposite Psyche)

  • Thunderbird II (opposite Sunspot)

NOTE: This lineup reflects the members and roster most commonly associated with the Hellions. The list also includes their original New Mutants opposite.

New Mutants: Xavier’s students were more than rivals; many of them were also Hellions. Their brief membership can be found in New Mutants #38 (Apr 1986) through New Mutants #40 (Jun 1986). Amara Aquilla (Magma) became the only exception, however, when she left her team mates to join the Hellions in New Mutants #57 (Nov 1987).

  • Cannonball

  • Cypher

  • Karma

  • Magik

  • Magma (later rejoined)

  • Wolfsbane

More Hellions: Emma Frost continued to recruit young mutants into the Hellions. One of her first recruits didn’t stay long. Firestar quit when she realized what the Hellfire Club had planned for her (as detailed in the four part Firestar mini-series (Mar 1986 – Jun 1986)). Beef and Bevatron first appeared in New Warriors #9 (Mar 1991) becoming the only other Hellions to actively participate in missions though they were not the only ones enrolled. Fifteen unnamed members shared the team’s final fate. It was during this expansion that James Proudstar (Thunderbird II) quietly left the team resisting considerable pressure to rejoin.

  • Firestar (quit)

  • Beef

  • Bevatron

The End: The Hellions met a gruesome death in Uncanny X-Men #281 (Oct 1991) and Uncanny X-Men #282 (Nov 1991). That final battle put Emma Frost into a comma while Trevor Fitzroy and his Sentinels massacred her students. Of the four Hellions that survived, only two were original members. Emma Frost never fully recovered from the event. She later joined the X-Men as both a hero and a teacher to both Generation X and the Hellions Squad.

  • Beef

  • Bevatron

  • Catseye

  • Empath (orignal; survived)

  • Firestar (survived)

  • Jetstream

  • Magma (survived)

  • Roulette

  • Tarot (mysteriously resurrected)

  • Thunderbird II (original; survived)
