Synopsis
|
The race to get R2-D2 into place against the World Devastators commences aboard the Falcon. THe plan: get him close enough to the ones threatening the water world of Mon Calimari and he can transmit a code that will lower the Devastators' shields. All of them.
And at first the plan works relatively well. But Commander Kiev, the Imperial officer in charge, soon realizes that his defenses may be down, but his ability to produce new ships is fully functional. So he counters by creating a new fleet of aquatic commando ships to frustrate the Republic forces.
R2-D2 soon discovers, though, that he can use variations of his "drop shields" code to send any command to the Devastators, so he ends the battle by forcing the Imperial ships to collide with each other.
After this victory, Mon Mothma and General Dodonna download more information from R2-D2 which reveals the Emperor's plan to conquer the galaxy once again. They begin to formulate a counter attack.
Leia, meanwhile, consults the holocron she stole for clues of how to personally defeat the Emperor, using the Force. She returns, alone, to confront Palpatine, and must battle her brother, who is now fallen to the Dark Side.
Fortunately, Luke has managed to retain some measure of self-identity within the Dark Side, and that which remains of the Luke she knows begs Leia for help, through the Force. Leia appeals to Luke as they battle with lightsabers, and the Emperor's grip is steadily weakened. Seeing that Leia is returning Luke to the Light, the Emperor himself joins the battle, in which Luke joins his sister against the Emperor. In the progress of this combat, Luke slices--as careful Star Wars observers will not be surprised--the Emperor's hand off.
Palpatine is enraged and sends a Force storm hurtling towards the New Republic's base where Mon Mothma and the rest of the gang are pondering the battle they think is coming.
Combining their efforts, the Skywalker twins divert the Force storm back onto the Emperor's flagship. They escape the Eclipse as it is exploding, taking, they believe, the Emperor's spirit with it.
Leia says that the reason they had enough power to thwart the Emperor was not just becuase they had combined their abilitities, but also because she felt her unborn child join in from the womb. Luke sees this revelation as an omen that the Jedi Knights would now be able to rebuild and prosper in the galaxy once again.
