2009-02-18 00:11:30 Skyhawke Synopsis RASL re-enters the regular world at the same mountain top from Issue 2 after having counted to 10. He sees no one is around which in his case is good (and is why he chooses out of the way places to drift.) He does find it to be a pain when his jeep isn’t around (in this case it isn’t). He decides to walk to town. He mentions he is back in the world where “Dylan isn’t Dylan”. At a bus stop he sees the Man in the Maze symbol used as an ad for a Maze of Life exhibit for a museum. He decides to drive to it; as he does he notes that he counts so he can focus and not black out (and that blacking out is how he came to the no-Dylan dimension the first time.) He assumes Annie’s killer is following him, and wonders how he got the technology. (Although he does say if he could master it, the assassin could also.) RASL had help from 2 other people, he mentions, and that one of them is dead. The story flashes back to when he worked for a military base known as The Compound, “where his troubles began.” He works with a man named Miles and his wife Maya. We learn RASL’s name is Robert, and that he and his partners are working on some sort of array. According to Miles it’s an anti weapon (based off of ideas by Nikola Tesla) which acts like a barrier against missiles. RASL isn’t so sure about the project, but Miles has, in the past, supported Robert’s teleportation suits (t-suits). They do not function properly during this time though. The phone rings and Miles tells them the project has now been allowed and the budget doubled. While he gets a bottle of champagne Maya kisses RASL saying “Even if you could leave him, I know you can’t leave me.” It is clear the two are having an affair. Maya tells Miles Robert won’t back out, leaving him unsure of the future. Before going in the museum he notes that he destroyed everything before he left (the exact details aren’t explained) but he is surprised it took them so long to rebuild. While he is in the museum he meets the curator who looks exactly like Maya but in this dimension she doesn’t know RASL (instead her name is Uma Giles.) After showing her the silver medallion to examine she says it looks like Hopi silverwork, though his “friend” (Annie) was part Pumi. (These are common Indian tribes found in the southwest mostly in Arizona.) He leaves the museum shortly after, reeling from the experience. He visits this dimension’s Annie’s house (at the time a client leaves.) As RASL is about to drive away, the assassin with the lizard like face comes to kill her (seemingly again.) RASL goes in to see the man has her hostage and also mentioning he has something that belongs to “us” and they want it back. RASL takes the gun and points it at the assassin but startles him by saying that there are many different Annie’s but only one of him and Robert. A brutal fight ensues and Annie soon aims the gun at both of them. The assassin runs outside and RASL makes sure Annie is ok. Outside the assassin (with his own immersion suit) enters The Drift. RASL gets ready to do the same telling Annie to get to safety. She asks where he is going and he says “After him!” He enters the Drift, leaving this dimension’s Annie with the gun, in awe and bewildered.
