Korak aids a young hunter who is beset by two lions, and they each kill one. The black wears a mail vest and carries a sword and shield along with his spear. He is trying to become a knight of Queen Tandika, a native ruler who has set up a court of chivalry. The price for honor is a lion skin, and when Billali and Korak return they are joined by another knight, Mandyama, in presenting their skins before the queen. Each are rewarded with a handmaiden for a bride, and Korak challenges Mandyama for a young white girl. They have to have a joust on horseback for her, and Korak soundly defeats Mandyama. Korak is made a knight of Tandika, he and the girl are married, and that night in their quarters Korak discusses escape with the enslaved nurse. They climb out over the wall and get an elephant to carry them off.
