Machine Man is on the run, trying to avoid capture by Colonel Kragg and his men. He finds a gas station in the countryside, and uses his powers to transform a handful of pebbles into diamonds, which he trades to the owner of the gas station for a set of tires. When Kragg and his men arrive, Machine Man bursts out of the garage, having built a makeshift tricycle with which to effect his escape.
Meanwhile in Central City, Doctor Spalding must contend with the enigma of the patient in room zero, a man who has seemingly gone crazy with the delusion that he is a spaceman. Machine Man arrives in Central City to seek asylum with Dr. Spalding, who he had befriended after his initial escape. Machine Man confirms Spalding's suspicion that the patient in room zero is not crazy, but is actually acting as a sort of long-distance radio, receiving an interstellar distress call. Dr. Spalding and Machine Man rush to room zero to begin their cosmic rescue mission.
