Letters Column: Mysterious Messages To The META-ZONE

Sgt. Barak knows where Shade is and takes a vow of silence regarding him, Shade having saved his life.

Dr. Sagan is interested in Shade because he is known to have survived the area of madness in the Zero-Zone, which causes those who've been in it to scream uncontrollable until their systems shut down.

Mellu Loron and Rac Shade, severally, seek out Gola Rae, a scientist out on parole for stealing equipment, who was Captain Majan's former lover. Rae puts Loron in a device to send her to the area of madness, but Shade intervens and takes Rae there, and takes Mellu out, taking her to Dr. Sagan, where Shade risks his life to transfer the madness out of her, he having been protected by the force-field of the M-Vest.

When Rae's assistant, Ogaf, returns to Sude, he is outraged at the loss of Rae, but also at Mellu's insanity.

Soon after, the hospital is searched by Sude's bogus patrol and Shade found. Mellu, now freed of her madness, pistol-whips Shade, and the patrol puts him in a tranquilizer helmet.
