Repackaging the original trilogy—again
This trade was included free-of-charge with Wal Mart Exclusive DVD of the Original and Special Editions of Episode VI.
Like the DVD it came with, it was a combination of elements from the original Marvel film adaptation and its later Dark Horse Special Edition counterpart. It was, however, a faithful reprinting of neither.
The packaging for the DVD box set was thus inevitably . . . deceptive. It pictured an exact duplication of the cover to A Marvel Comics Super Special #27 as the included reprint comic. In fact, though, the book was a virtual reprint of the special edition trade resulting from Classic Star Wars: Return of the Jedi (1994)—but with an altered pre-production sketch gallery. Where the SE trade included 30 pages of art from both the original and SE trilogies, this contains 36 pages taken exclusively from the production files of the original trilogy.
It is thus a slightly unique book, which may, therefore, one day fetch a different price than other versions of the Dark Horse re-workings of the original Marvel material.
The front cover is, minus the original text, from Bill Sienkiewicz' A Marvel Comics Super Special #27, while the back is, rather oddly, an Al Williamson frieze from Episode V's Battle of Hoth.
Adair was the editor of the collected edition; Cooper and Martin were the series editors from Dark Horse's Classic Star Wars: Return of the Jedi. Unusually, the true original Marvel editors (Jo Duffy and Michael Higgins) receive no credit anywhere in this edition. This is all the more odd, given that Dark Horse's original Classic Star Wars: Return of the Jedi #1 and #2—from which this issue receives the bulk of its source material—did, in fact, credit the original Marvel editors.
Page count is approximate.
On the Star Wars reprint trail
In an effort to most accurately represent the multitude Star Wars original trilogy reprints, we've taken pains in this database to link only the closest two editions to each other. Thus, though this issue cites Star Wars: Return of the Jedi (1983) and Classic Star Wars: Return of the Jedi (1994) as the titles from which this issue is taken, we list only the most similar issue from the 1994 title as the reprint source for this issue.
To follow the historical trail of the material in this book, click on the "collects/reprints" link, above, and continue clicking on each new set of "collects/reprints" links with which you are presented. At each stage, you will be given the thing that particular issue most closely reprints.
