Superman Past and Future (2008) TPB
From the perspective of the 2006 reader of this story, the question of which Superman is depicted in this issue is an interesting one.
Clearly, readers in 1976 would have thought this a purely imaginary story, as, indeed, its writers intended.
As it depicts a baby Kal-El who landed on Earth in 1976, though, it could just as easily be interpreted as a Silver Age story pre-saging the 21st-century reinterpretation of the Byrne post-Crisis Superman. Certainly this milestone issue would not have escaped the gaze of noted-DC historians Loeb and Waid, who together are largely responsible for the Superman present in 2006.
Regardless, Infinite Crisis tells us that this story is no longer to be considered "imaginary", but to have actually occurred on some "real" Earth, somewhere, somewhen.
