Synopsis: enlists the aid of a "blonde bombshell" of a woman. Johnny needs to get a mask from a safe. Without this mask a criminal will be unable to pull of a jewel heist later that night. Unbeknownst to Johnny, her motives for helping Johnny are impure. The girl, Dinah Drake, is really trying to steal the jewels herself, and so is happy to help Johnny hinder the "competition". Thanks to the Thunderbolt, neither she nor the criminals are successful at stealing the jewels. She leaves the scene quickly after the Thunderbolt's power is revealed, having stolen only the heart of the young Johnny Thunder.
Having been introduced in a story featuring Johnny Thunder, it's altogether appropriate for the original Black Canary to have died--well, okay, just her body--in a story featuring the Thunderbolt (Justice League of America #219-220.) Indeed, it's kind of touching how Johnny and his Thunderbolt played such a significant role throughout her life, even though he never actually "got" the Birdie. It's one of DC's lesser known, but most interesting, unrequieted love stories. And this short story is where it all starts.
Synopsis: The Black Canary gave a package to Johnny Thunder and asked him to take care of it until she returned. Crooks grabbed the package and fled. A rock hit Johnny's head. There was a card from the Black Canary tied to the rock. It told him the package was worse than dynamite in the wrong hands. He followed the crooks to their hideout,a castle. They captured him,put him into a sack and lowered him into a pit of crocodiles. When the Canary arrived she was also captured, put in a sack, and lowered into the pit. Johnny cut her free. The crooks had overlooked his Boy Scout knife. She explained that the package contained evidence that would convict a dangerous criminal. They captured the crooks, and the Black Canary gave Flint's murder diary to the cops.
Synopsis: Johnny Thunder and Peachy Pet got a pie. When the pie was opened a black canary flew out. Johnny chased the canary into an alley. He asked two men if they had seen a black canary. They captured him, tied him up beside the Black Canary, and asked him where the map was. The crooks took Johnny and the Canary into the alley, locked them in a cage, lifted it with a helicopter, and dropped it. They were saved by Johnny's thunderbolt, who took them back to Johnny's house, where the crooks were looking for the map. They caught the crooks, but thought Peachy Pet had eaten the map when she ate the pie. Then the black canary appeared with the map.
Synopsis: A street photographer took a photograph of Johnny Thunder. Behind him were bank robbers fleeing with their loot. When the photo arrived at Johnny's home it did not show him or the robbers. It showed a man with a handlebar mustache. When he went to the Ace Photo shop to discover what had happened to his photo, he found a dead man, and the Black Canary bending over him. Suddenly the police arrived. Now the photo showed the Black Canary and Johnny Thunder robbing the bank. Crooks held up the cops and took away the Black Canary and Johnny Thunder. One explained that they replaced themselves in the photo with the Black Canary and Johnny Thunder, then put the picture of the old man over it. When it faded it apparently showed them robbing the bank. The Black Canary and Johnny Thunder fled and hid in a large tank of gasoline. When the Thunderbolt rescued them it touched the gas and it exploded. They went back to the photo shop and arrested the crooks.
Synopsis: Johnny Thunder was astonished to see two boys pick up trees and throw them. They were phony trees that crooks were using to conceal a landing strip. The crooks captured Johnny. The Black Canary sprang from the airplane and tried to rescue him, but she was captured too. They told her that if she did not parachute onto the Peters' Estate and pull the job for them they would throw Johnny out of the plane without a parachute, but they did that anyway, and when she left the Peters' mansion with the loot the fired their aircraft's guns at her. The Thunderbolt saved Johnny then fired at the plane, but was hit by a lightning rod and grounded. When he recovered The Black Canary, Johnny Thunder and the Thunderbolt were tied to giant fireworks and had been launched. The Thunderbolt freed them, carried them back to the ground and they caught the crooks.
Synopsis: Larry Lance ordered some flowers to be sent to his home, and while he was in the shop he told Dinah that he was investigating the disappearance of trucks on the Franklin Turnpike. After he left a woman ordered a wreath sent to Larry. Late at night on top of a truck the Black Canary saw the headlights of another truck coming towards them. When the truck crashed the Black Canary and Larry Lance fought, both thinking the other was a crook. The crooks captured them, tied them to a log and launched them into the river, towards a waterfall. The Canary had a small knife in her locket and cut them free. They arrived at the crash site just as another truck crashed trying to avoid the oncoming lights. They caught the crooks and it was explained that the crooks put a large mirror across the road, so the lights the drivers tried to avoid were their own.
Synopsis: A lampost shot at a man. Then a mailbox gassed him. He told a policeman, who did not believe him and walked away. Then flames came from a fire hydrant. At the railway station on his way home he met the Black Canary. She said she would help. In the station cafeteria he told her his uncle had left him the Juke Box night club. They were attacked by crooks, but escaped, and she told him to meet her at the Juke Box. When they met they were attacked by the crooks, who bound them and put them on a giant phonograph record. When they were flung off they were carried away by a carpet of black canaries. She captured the crooks, and then threw the man she met outside the Juke Box. He was not Phil, the man she met at the station. He was Phil's twin brother, Bob. She noticed that Phil had a pocket watch, but Bob had a white mark around his wrist, left by a wrist watch.
Synopsis: Larry Lance was picking up his daily buttonhole from Dinah Drake's flower shop when a woman entered, asked for his help and died. More women came in and demanded that he hand over the crimson crystal. Dinah went into the back room and became the Black Canary, but when she returned the women had gone, taking Larry with them. She found a huge crimson crystal in the dead woman's hand. Two policemen entered, thought she was the murderess, and tried to arrest her. She escaped and put an ad in the daily papers, offering to exchange the crystal for one private eye at Maleek's Bridge. At the bridge mysterious women captured her and took her to Eagle Rock Mountain, where a swami ordered his followers to kill Larry and the Black Canary. She pressed her locket, and out came a smoke screen, enabling her to escape. She handed the criminals over to the cops, showed the duped women that the crystal was a fake.
