Synopsis: Batman, Robin (Jason Todd) and Wonder Woman visit the Fortress of Solitude for Superman's birthday. Anxious about buying appropriate gifts "for the man who has everything", their fears are replaced with weightier concerns when they discover a catatonic Superman under the control of Mongul.
The villain has trapped Superman's mind in pursuit of his fondest ambitions, rendering him complely subdued and vulnerable. While in this state we, Superman's greatest desire is revealed to the audience, but none of the other characters, to have lived as a normal husband and father on an un-exploded Krypton.
Moore and Gibbons spend a good deal of time painting a picture of a domesticated Kal-El with a still-living Jor-El, a wife and a son.
Meanwhile, Batman, Robin and Wonder Woman try, mostly unsuccessfully, to defeat Mongul and rescue Superman.
Eventually, though, it is Kal-El's own mental strength that allows him to turn away from the fantasy and come back to assist his friends before Mongul kills them all.

Synopsis: In the first part of the story, Superman discovers Bizarro going on a rampage that results in his suicide, his secret identity as Clark Kent is compromised and exposed to the public, and the Daily Planet is being attacked by an army of Metallos. Meanwhile, Brainiac's metallic skull merges with Lex Luthor's head, taking control of him and leading him to gather the Kryptonite Man in a final showdown at Superman's Fortress of Solitude, where Superman is protecting his remaining friends.
In the second part of this story, Superman deals with the losses of more of his friends at the hands of the Legion of Super Villains, the Kryptonite Man, and the combined Luthor-Brainiac, who have sealed off the area around the Fortress of Solitude to prevent anyone going in or out. Superman realizes who is really behind all the attacks, and uses the Phantom Zone projector to kill the one being responsible prior to his self-exposure to Gold Kryptonite and his eventual alleged death.
