The story starts with Cyclops attacking Storm in her attic room. She quickly realizes that Candra controls her teammate’s action. The X-Ternal departs her victim’s body after leaving the wind rider a message: she wants what was stolen from her returned.

Ororo recounts her childhood to a dazed Cyclops. She was a skilled thief in Cairo under the tutelage of Achmed El-Gibar. When she stole a stunning ruby from a fortified mansion, lightning killed the guards shortly before the entire building exploded. Storm escaped but noticed the jewel no longer glowed as brightly. Her mentor scolded his prize pupil explaining that the jewel housed the soul of the immortal Candra. Storm leaves to confront Candra before Cyclops can summon the other X-Men.

In Washington, D.C., Cannonball and Phoenix talk about the recent assassination of Graydon Creed (X-Factor #130). He tells her that his father died before he could fulfill a promise to take his children to see the nation’s capital. Sam now sits in front of the George Washington Monument thinking that his father may’ve seen more of the real America from Kentucky than the “important” people attending Creed’s funeral. Jean offers some words of encouragement. He should not blame himself for he did the best to prevent the murder.

Storm finds Candra at a museum displaying a near life-size replica of an Egyptian temple. Candra threatens Ororo revealing that she holds Karima as hostage. She even used the girl’s former friend, Jamil, to identify the thief who stole her heart-stone.

Jamil focuses his considerable psionic abilities on Storm giving her the illusion that the Black Panther was again in her arms. She see through the vision and attacks, but when the smoke clears, Jamil holds the gem as the Shadow King reveals himself to be in possession of the young mutant’s body.
