Synopsis:
In the "scheming" fashion readers had come to expect of the post-Remembrance of the Daleks Seventh Doctor, the chessboard is out in full force with this one-parter. Only this time, his companions are the chess pieces.

The Doctor tells Benny that she needs to go to 1981 and join a pop band, and Ace gets dropped off in the 57th century to fight the Chelonaians. They believe they are checking up on the integrity of the timestream, but really the Doctor intends for them to change history. By changing history, the Timewyrm will hopefully come out of hiding--and into a trap laid by the Doctor. The plan works, history returns to its normal shape, and the Timewyrm is forever banished from reappearing in the "real Universe"--but the companions are none too happy with the Doctor for having been unwittingly used as bait.

Unconcerned with their anger, the Doctor merely infuriates them more by deciding to dramatize their adventure in a new novel.

Notes:
This story celebrates the 10th anniversary of Virgin's New Adventures range of novels. It is very much of a last hurrah, however. Not only was the Virgin line almost done publishing at this point, but this story was the final appearance of the Seventh Doctor in the pages of Doctor Who Magazine.
