While visiting the remains of Matt Cable, Swamp Thing finds that the water seeping into the mausoleum where Matt's ashes are kept are tainted with oil drilled from the Gulf of Mexico.
A local Cajun gardener, Adras Moulton, loses his wife, Dorisca, to natural causes and laments that not even the land is remaining because the oil drilling is causing the land to be slowly immersed, not like it was back in 1937 when Le Bon Gumbo (Alex Olsen), who had kept the land fresh and verdant, departed for Brazil, people were friendlier, and there was limited influence from English-speaking culture.
Using rope, he casts a hex that brings his wife back to life, as well as every French person who was alive prior to Olsen's departure, which John and Etienne mistake for the ghostly trappers that wives use to keep their men going to church on Sunday.
Dorisca, Alec, and Labo convince Adras to take down the hex, which causes accidents, but returns the land to the heavily flooded state caused by Big Oil.
"The Elemental War" in Firestorm #90-93 and featuring Swamp Thing takes place after this issue.
