The imprisoned Vanguard attempts to escape from a maximum-security prison, while Roxanne Wells and her camerawoman fix Vanguard's helmet. Wally, Vanguard's sentient computer, using teleportation, exchanges Vanguard's body with that of an identical clone, nicknamed "Lurch." The real Vanguard ends up in a science lab instead of on his ship, however, where he accidentally damages important advanced machinery. A resulting accident grants one of the scientists super-powers, who then goes insane with power and renamed herself Modem. Wally, in teleporting Vanguard's helmet to the ship, brings Roxanne Wells with it.
