Nebulon, an alien, is punished by his people for high crimes. His punishment is to be stranded on earth. He has repeatedly tried to conquer earth. He seems to turn over a new leaf, and comes upon Thor. Thor has a talk with him, and decides to bring Nebulon to the Avengers. The Avengers agree to help him, though Iron Man only grudgingly. A woman of the same race as Nebulon convinces the Defenders that Nebulon means to take over the earth. The Avengers fight to defend Nebulon. After a battle, Nebulon teleports himself and the Avengers to the Himalayas. However, the Defenders find them after a matter of minutes, having been transported by the mysterious woman. Nebulon realizes that the woman is Nalia, his wife. Nalia wanted Nebulon to die, because Nebulon had chosen exile over death for his crimes, which is considered shameful by their people. This puts both the Avengers and the Defenders on Nebulon's side. Then, Nalia reveals that Nebulon has hidden an Ennui device, which is sucking the living essence out of the heroes. Captain America uses his shield to knock the machine so that it is pointing at Nebulon. However, the machine was designed for humans, and it is killing Nebulon. The Beast tries to save Nebulon by moving the ray, but Nalia prevents him, allowing the ray to strike both Nebulon and herself, killing them both.
