In response to Kal-El's question, Jor-El tells him that he is as much of the world as he could make him, but that he is not from it. To learn his origins, he must allow the voice in the Green Lantern to take him to Oa, where he is told not to find Green Lanterns different from him "strange." To learn his origins, he is instructed on how to use his Green Lantern energies on himself, with the caveat that the 24-hour limit on the ring has caused some using that method to go insane.
Reviving his infant memories of being placed in the rocket, connecting his powering ring to the Oa computer matches the characteristics of his birth world with Earth, which has been devastated by an asteroid impact in Asia. Outraged that the Green Lantern of that sector was away fighting a war among fifty worlds and did nothing to protect Earth, Kal-El travels there to see what can be done.
On Earth, Kal-El finds the wasteland of Asia, the ruins of Atlantis, Themyscira, and Gotham City, and finally finds a survivor in a boat off the coast of Madagascar, who informs him that there are believed to be between one and two million people left alive on Earth.
Kal-El arrives in Metropolis, where Lex Luthor is binding its people together in solidarity in a way that resembles Nazisim. Luthor, using the Aesop analogy of bundled sticks, shows a damaged JLA badge and says that they were bound only to each other and were destroyed for that reason. Luthor wants to destroy a small group of rebels holed up in the Daily Planet building, led by Perry White. Widowed Martha Kent and Army Captain Lois Lane are among the rebels.
Kal-El uses his Green Lantern powers to make improvements, allow the sun to penetrate Earth's dust cover, but is defeated by Luthor when his ring reaches the end of a day's power, after which he is captured and jailed by Luthor's men.
Lois Lane and another of the rebels, Jimmy Olsen, make a rescue attempt, and outraged at their capture, punches the cell wall and makes a dent in it. Realizing that his adaptation to Krypton has made him a sort of Super-Man, he frees himself, then Lois and Jimmy, and mixing his Krytponian and Green Lantern powers, confines Lex Luthor to a remote island and brings the Temple of Wisdom from Themyscira to Metropolis based on Luthor's decrying of its worth in a speech.
The Oas give him the length of his usage of the power ring to decide whether to remain on Earth not as a Green Lantern, or return to being the Green Lantern of Krypton's sector. When he makes his decision, Abin Sur, the Green Lantern of Earth's sector, comes to claim the Lantern and power ring from him, but says that destiny may make his non-membership in the Corps short-lived.
Back on Krypton, Jor-El and Lara abandon the bodysuits that allow them to live for centuries for their familiar outfits of the silver age DC Comics, intent to gather a group of followers to end the stagnation of Krypton, which results in their exile.
