Synopsis:
Stockbridge, England. The town just doesn't seem right to the Doctor. Everything's...backwards somehow. Searching around for someone to simply give him directions, odd things happen in the background. A man doing his daily crosswords is led to clues that seem relative to the Doctor. One clue demands the answer "Doctor". Another calls for the word, "ensnared".

The Doctor hails a person to give him directions and she, bizarrely, summons "the butcher, the baker, and the candlestick-maker". They all then try to kill the Doctor.

From out of nowhere, a young woman saves the Doctor by killing his would-be attackers. The Doctor is angry that she's taken lives, until she points out that they weren't alive at all. Their conversation is joined by an older man, whom the Doctor recognizes: Maxwell Edison. They had worked together in the past, when Edison was younger, and the Doctor was in a previous regeneration. Max explains that in the intervening time, he's formed the Bureau for Interplanetary Liason, and that he and the girl, Izzy, are working together to counter the fact that Stockbridge has now been invaded by aliens.

A foxhunter, seen earlier in the teaser to the story, appears to insist that this is not exactly the case. He demands a thing called "the Focus"--a pendant Izzy is wearing around her neck. She responds by aiming her gun at Marwood, with the obvious intent to kill him. This time, the Doctor knows the person in Izzy's gunsight is real, so he knocks the gun out of her hand, and pulls her into a run towards the TARDIS.

Meanwhile the man working the crossword puzzle gets a clue for an eight-letter name of a villain. Before the Doctor and Izzy get to the TARDIS, a figure materializes in their path. It is the Doctor's old foe, The Toymaker. He announces they are now part of his games.

Notes:
Riggs inked page 1, but otherwise the inker was Smith.
