Using Enterprise and Number One's ship to draw the Klingons away from the Bounty, Kirk makes a run for Algol II, the planet that produced the strange object which initially transported Colt to the future. The battle rages in space, with Chang appearing to have the upper hand. Planetside, however, Kirk and Colt manage to find a way back to the past, collapsing this alternate reality in on itself.

The Pike of this story is in command of the Enterprise of the post-Star Trek IV time period. Thus, it can be assumed that Colt's disappearance changed a great many things in this time line.

The ending is quite reminiscent of the Next Generation episode, "Yesterday's Enterprise".
