The problem with being transported to the future is that your absence in your present might really screw someone else's future. Colt discovers that her sudden disappearance caused a young Jim Kirk to be assigned to Pike's Enterprise, disallowing him the opportunity to make a name for himself on other vessels.

Frustrated with his slow advancement up the ranks, he quit Starfleet and is now a captain in a fleet of another kind. He and Scotty are running a freighter. Colt boards Kirk's ship, as she tries to avoid encountering Starfleet while searching for a way back to her own time.

Kirk, though unaware that her presence in this future might be linked to his lot in life, decides to help her return. To do this, he'll have to take his ship, the Bounty into Klingon space for a rendezvous with General Chang.

The Pike of this story is in command of the Enterprise of the post-Star Trek IV time period. Thus, it can be assumed that Colt's disappearance changed a great many things in this time line.
