The Fallen (Star Trek)

The Federation colony on Jubal is just a little too close to the Tholian border for comfort. Sending out their advance parties, Chakuun ghostships, the Tholians make it very clear they have no intent to allow the Federation to get so close. The Enterprise moves to protect, but suffer a bloody nose in the act. Pike returns home to Earth for repairs and face-to-face talks with the brass. Knowing they'll be sent back out to a certain war, Pike allows his crew shore leave on Earth. Many take the opportunity to visit loved ones for what many believe is their last time, before returning to the fight waiting for them at the Tholian border.

Star Trek: The Stardate Collection (2013) HC vol. 02

This story--indeed this whole title, for this is not the Tholians' first appearance in Early Voyages--contradicts canon by suggesting that it was Pike, and not Kirk, who made first contact with the Tholians. This clashes with the original series episode, "The Tholian Web".

Greg Adams is known to have provided the cover inks, but the cover penciller is unknown. The style does seem consistent with tat of the interior penciller, Mike Collins, however.
