Atrocitus drifts in deep space, wondering how he still lives. Dex-Starr constructed a heart out of light to save Atrocitus, a power he achieved by drinking the blood of Rankorr. Atrocitus seeks out another red ring so he might exact revenge on Guy Gardner.

On the planet of Ysmault, Gardner and the other Red Lanterns discuss what they might name their new ship. Zilius Zox takes some interest in fixing the ship up while Gardner sneaks off to report back to Jordan. He claims that the Red Lanterns are now longer a threat, admits to taking two lives and demands to be withdrawn from his mission.

Dex-Starr leads Atrocitus to the planet where Lancer is keeping the avatar known as Butcher captive. Atrocitus is somehow able to merge with the avatar thus seemingly renewing his power, and resets his sight on returning to Ysmault where Guy Gardner's treachery is soon discovered.
