Synopsis:
At the New York City Explorers' Club, Hellboy meets several associates of his "father's", but in that club he sees a mummy that he is instantly drawn to. It shows him a flashback of when he was a child seeing a giant rhinoceros and leads him into a city of the dead where Makoma resides.

The mummy tells the tale of Makoma, how he told his mother to cast him into a lake filled with crocodiles. She did as she was told and, after one day and one night, all of the crocodiles were dead and Makoma was fully grown with an iron hammer in his hand. The Elders told him of giants which their people feared, and he sets out to find them. After years of wandering, Makoma discovers several giants. One after the other, he defeats them and puts them in his bag. After defeating four, he stumbles upon a demon who tempts him into becoming a monster himself by beating the demon to death with his hammer. He refuses and pulls the demon from its shell and keeps it in a separate cage. Makoma/Hellboy wanders on with the four giants and a demon in tow with his adventure to be continued in the next issue.
