Dark Horse has this to say about this TPB:

Even with less than twenty minutes of "screen time" to his credit, the most popular character from the Star Wars trilogy is Boba Fett. Dark Horse offers a number of comics featuring the merciless bounty hunter, but it all starts here, in this trade paperback collecting Russ Manning's Star Wars newspaper strips. It was in these strips, which originally ran in 1979 and 1980, that Boba Fett made his very first appearance in print, making this a true must-have item for anyone looking to become a Jedi Master! The artwork has been colored, reformatted, and expertly retouched by Rick Hoberg, who worked with Manning on the original strips. Relive the adventures that thrilled readers seventeen years ago! Experience the very first comics appearance of the infamous Boba Fett (dated prior to his motion-picture debut)! And delight in Star Wars legend Al Williamson's new color cover, dedicated to Manning!

And that's all true. However, it greatly exaggerates the importance of Boba Fett to the overall structure of the TPB. In truth, Boba Fett appears only at the very end of this TPB, which otherwise concerns itself with various unrelated adventures of Luke, Han and Leia, set approximately a year before the start of Episode V.

This contains a reprinting of what is technically the second appearance of Boba Fett, in any medium (the first was The Star Wars Holiday Special, aired on November 17, 1978 - the story in this collection that featured him ran from June 17-August 10, 1980. Although technically, he was first shown at the San Anselmo's Country Fair parade on September 24, 1978, marching alongside Darth Vader at the parade, but that isn't really a "medium" in the same sense.). It pre-dates the film and any comic book appearance. Nevertheless, because the adaptation of The Empire Strikes Back was done in a book format--and this done in syndicated newspaper strips--the screen adaptation will still have pride of place as the first comic book appearance.
