Note that while this is the most convenient way in which Superman's Pal Jimmy Olsen is available to 21st century readers, it is by no means indicative of the kind of work typically in the title. Kirby's run was brief, and only at the very tail end of the long-running series. That said, these are some of the more important issues in DC history, as they not only demonstrated how an artist could make several different, highly diverse, titles tie together to tell a coherent tale--think of Kirby's Fourth World saga as a "test" for the various Crises that would be coming in the DCU--but they showed how DC could modernize its characters without going through a crisis that left whole characters stranded in some nebulous, out-of-continuity place. This volume is particularly important to the development of Superman, giving us the introduction of Darkseid, the introduction of Morgan Edge and Intergang, the first appearance of what would become The Cadmus Project, the genetic sampling of Superman that would eventually result in Superboy (III), and a general jettison of most of the fanciful notions of the Mort Weisenger reign over Metropolis. In these pages, the first intentional, concerted revision of the Superman character was begun. The version didn't "stick", exactly, but some elements from Kirby do still persist. [Anderson and Plastino's penciling work was exclusively in redrawing the heads of some of the major characters, and is thought to be uncredited.]
