Synopsis:
In-fighting among the Autobots at the revelation that "Sparkplug" helped the Decepticons results "Sparkplug" collapsing from a heart attack. Ratchet and Buster rush him to the local hospital.
In the meantime, Megatron emerges from his headquarters to challenge the military might of the army and shrugs off their most concentrated assault, leaving Earth helpless against the Decepticons.
In the Ark, Optimus and Huffer discuss options for defeating the Decepticons, eventually settling on a search for the Dinobots, five autobots re-created by the Ark in the form of the planet's then-dominant life forms who fought the Decepticon Shockwave millions of years ago. A probe is dispatched to find the Dinobots.
Now dangerously low on energy, Optimus Prime concocts a plan that will infuse himself and four other Autobots with the remaining power reserves from the other Autobots.
Megatron leads a direct assault on the Ark, finding himself facing five fully-powered Autobots instead of the masses he had expected. As the battle royale begins, the probe dispatched to discover the Dinobots disturbs something beneath the surface of the planet.
Celebrating their impending victory over the Autobots, the Decepticons are suddenly overcome, eaten away from the inside by the corrosive fuel mixture "Sparkplug" cooked up to disable them. But before Optimus can declare the battle won, an enormous energy blast fills the mountainside...and when it subsides, Shockwave stands triumphant over all.
Notes:
Originally conceived as a 4-issue limited series, this comic was substantially revised when sales indicated that a monthly series could be sustained. Most importantly, the mention of the Dinobots on pages 10 and 11, and Shockwave's appearance on pages 21 and 22 were removed. The final page of the comic was also re-worked. The original can be seen here: http://www.tfarchive.com/comics/faq/alternate.jpg
Though he is not credited in the book, Mark Texeira drew the cover of Transformers #4. His name appears vertically, parallel to the back of Megatron's cannon in the lower-left corner of the cover.
