Corbett escapes from a mental institution and flees to Mexico with his daughter, Alicia. He has no money, and encounters a blind beggar named Valdez (who really isn't blind) who explains that the towns main industry is mining silver from poor quality ore. The only one who makes money is an Aztec-garbed silversmith named Caballo, who creates sculptures and sells them. Corbett has Valdez take him to see the man about being his aent, but is refused. Corbett steals a book from Caballo's house and learns that Xotoka's method really works, but when he returns, Caballo has taken Alicia. Corbett soon learns that only he has the touch of Xotoka, and that Caballo is up to something far more sinister...
