Secret Files and Origins
A reporter, Trudy Trusoe, is on assignment at Legion World, introducing her viewers to the Legionnaires. It is a generally positive report, casting the characters in a heroic light. Unbekownst to her and her audience, however, a trio of villains are speeding towards Earth to interrupt her puff piece with some hard news...
The Legion (2001) TPB
An unusual entry in the Secret Files and Origins line because it's a single story, rather than an anthology. Also odd is the fact that amidst the fairly superficial story is a major advancement in the main series' then-current Superboy/Livewire storyline. Those who were following the main book were thus obliged to endure a retelling of the basic mythos of The Legion's universe in order to keep current on one of the key plots of the book.
Another way of looking at this, of course, is that new readers were allowed an easy jumping-on point with this issue. Or at least they would have been had the title survived for a significant time after this issue. As things turned out, however, the main book was cancelled a few issues after, reducing this issue to something of a curiosity in Legion history. In a sense, this book became more of a summary for new readers than an introduction.
It also probably caused a fair deal of confusion in comic shops across North America that carried back issues. It was not uncommon to walk into a comic shop in December of 2005 to pick up issue 1 of the 2005 series of Legion of Superheroes, only to find that this issue was still on the shelves. The unaware would've found two issues that both told a kind of origin tale about two very different approaches to the same super group.
