Letters Column: Avengers Assemble!

Synopsis:
A godlike being called the Shadow King teleports into the Mediterranean Sea from another dimension. He is attacked by an aircraft carrier and creates a giant storm which sweeps it away and land locks it. Meanwhile, Wonder Man, accompanied by Beast, is having a tough time on the set of a spaghetti western. He accuses his friend, press agent Rachel Palmer, of being self serving. Simon & Hank get a message from the Avengers about a disturbance in the Mediterranean, and since they are closer, they need to investigate while the other Avengers head over. Meanwhile, some archeologists near Vesuvius uncover a human covered in lava from the eruption in 79 AD. Beast & Wonder Man are tossed aside by the powerful elemental powers of the Shadow King. Rachel had secretly followed them, and she is taken by the Shadow King. Rachel befriends the Shadow King, and he explains to her his purpose. He was part of a race of powerful beings thousands of years ago. Their goal was to balance the forces in nature. One day, a very powerful warrior named the Berserker was terrorizing the earth. His power was immense, and when they found that he planned to team up with the Roman Empire and rule the world, these earth lords knew that the balance in nature would be destroyed. They managed to bury the Berserker in the Vesuvius eruption. They elected the Shadow King, by lot, to stay behind, in case the Berserker ever reawakened, if would be his job to stop him. The Avengers then attack. They are losing the battle, when the Beast deduces that the Shadow King's power lies within his city. He tells the Avengers to destroy the city. They do, and as a result, the Shadow King lies dying, as his life force was also contained in it. Too late, Rachel is able to tell the Avengers the Shadow King's true purpose. They vow to finish the job he was tasked with.
