A space robot calls Kyle Raner to the Inertia Complex. There, he learns that all the robots serve nine organic beings called Overlords. Overlord Prime asks Kyle to find three missing, presumed dead, overlords.

In a crashed spaceship, Kyle finds an alien spider protecting its young. The Overlords command the robots to kill the spider, Kyle retaliates against them.

Kyle reveals to the overlords that the spider had to eat the missing overlords in order to protect its young. He leaves the overlords without their robot servants, and he returns the alien spiders to their homeworld.
