Synopsis:
1st appearance of the Justice League
1st appearance of Snapper Carr.
A giant intelligent starfish from space (Starro) sets his sights on earth. He energizes 3 normal starfish as his "deputies" and sends them out to help conquer the earth. Aquaman learns of the menace from a puffer fish and signals the league. Superman & Batman are too busy with other stuff, but Green Lantern, Flash, Wonder Woman & Martian Manhunter are available to help. Green Lantern battles on deputy, Wonder Woman & Martian Manhunter tam up on the 2nd, and Flash takes out the 3rd (in the town of Happy Harbor, where he meets Snapper Carr). The 5 JLA members unite to fight Starro at the end. Noticing that of all the people in Happy Harbor under Starro's mental control, Snapper was the only one who was immune. GL does an analysis of Snapper with his ring and notices that Snapper has traces of Calcium Oxide (lime) on him (he had been putting this on his lawn earlier). Starfish apparently don't like lime, so they get a few barrels and toss it on Starro, and in 3 panels the threat of Starro is defeated! Superman & Batman make an appearance in the 2nd-to-last panel where they induct Snapper as an honorary JLA member.

Notes:
There is a "science" page feature on the starfish family with facts on starfish, sea cucumbers, & sea urchins.
There is a text-page with an excerpt from a US House of Representatives hearing centered on the possibility of faster than light travel. (Julie Schwartz loved to add the science stuff in to the comics!)
