Postby EarthFurst » Fri Jun 03, 2016 2:02 am

Some suggestions (off the top of my head) for June 21 (National Aboriginal Day).

Any comics published by Healthy Aboriginal Network: (so Indy Book of the Day)

Clear Skies: A Family Violence Story (2015)
Image

Darkness Calls (2006)
(I think it was about resisting suicidal thoughts. Apparently sold out.)
Image

The Game Plan (2013)
(topic: Financial literacy ... as in being money smart and avoid bad things such as payday loan/advances.)
(The scan is meh. I might have a copy but probably will take a month to find.)

Path of the Warrior (2009)
"Physical education / gang awareness"
Image

EDIT: other comics published by same publisher
* Drawing Hope (Living with FASD : Fetal alcohol spectrum disorder)
* Droppin’ The Flag ("Integrating gang youth back into community')
* The Gift (Dog bites/returning to school)
* An Invited Threat (Diabetes awareness)
* It Takes a Village (Maternal child health)
* Just a Story (Mental health / stigma)
* Kiss Me Deadly (Sexual health)
* Lighting Up the Darkness (Youth in care)
* Lost Innocence (Residential school)
* River Run (Smoking prevention)

They also published things that I don't know if they were paper comics (but probably were)
1) On the Turn (Gambling awareness)
2) Standing Together (Youth health issues)
3) Making it Right (community justice)

moving on to comics NOT published by Healthy Aboriginal Network

HIGHLY suggest the Books of the Day include three below
1) The 500 Years of Resistance Comic Book (2010) - 4th printing
2) Graphic Classics (2001) - #24 "Native American Classics"
3) Moonshot: The Indigenous Comics Collection (2015) - HC vol. 01

* * * * * * * * * * * * * * * * * * * * * * * * * * * * * * * * * * * * * * * * * * * * * * * * * * * * * * * * * * * * * * * * *

* Arctic Comics (new hardcover about inuit and arctic) Plan to add to db.

* The 500 Years of Resistance Comic Book (2010) - 4th printing
http://comicbookdb.com/issue.php?ID=367486
publisher: Arsenal Pulp Press (so could be an Indy Book of the Day.)
Image

* Graphic Classics (2001) - #24 "Native American Classics"
http://comicbookdb.com/issue.php?ID=269932
publisher: "Eureka Productions" (so could be an Indy Book of the Day.)
Image

* Moonshot: The Indigenous Comics Collection (2015) - HC vol. 01
http://comicbookdb.com/issue.php?ID=346746
publisher: "AH Comics", so could be an Indy Book of the Day (or a TPB/Hardcover of the Day)
(when i find a print copy will see if it says "AH Comics" OR "Alternate History Comics")
(our DB says there is a softcover, but our DB doesn't have cover scan)
Image

* Turok (Turok, Son of Stone, Turok, Dinosaur Hunter, etc)
* Scalped

Now going over comics written by David Alexander Robertson.

There's a four issue series (mini-series?) titled 7 Generations:
1) Book 1: Stone
2) Book 2: Scars
3) Book 3: Ends/Begins
4) Book 4: The Pact

{ Book 2 set in smallpox epidemic of 1870-1871. Book 3 about resident school(s). }

Suggest the third cover, so the casual viewer of DB mainpage can see "book 3" and realize it is a series. And that one of the covers of the day is a residential school cover.

7 Generations (2010) - Book 3 "Ends/Begins"
http://comicbookdb.com/issue.php?ID=367550
Image

and there is a collection:
7 Generations: A Plains Cree Saga
which is in full-colour (while the individual issues were black-and-white)
http://www.portageandmainpress.com/prod ... nerations/

* * * * * * * * * * * * * * * * * * * * * * * * * * * * * * * * * * * * * * * * * * * * * * * * * * * * * * * * * * * * * * * * *

Another series is Tales from the Big Spirit
"stories of seven great Indigenous heroes from Canadian history"
http://www.portageandmainpress.com/prod ... ig-spirit/
* The Ballad of Nancy April: Shawnadithit
* The Chief: Mistahimaskwa
* The Land of Os: John Ramsay
* The Peacemaker: Thanadelthur ("peacemaker between the Cree and the Dene and interpreter for the governor of Fort York")
* The Poet: Pauline Johnson
* The Rebel: Gabriel Dumont ("great Métis leader of the Northwest Resistance" ... which reminds me that Louis Riel by Chester Brown could be a possibility)
* The Scout: Tommy Prince ("the most decorated Aboriginal soldier in Canada". "daring and bravery in World War II")

* * * * * * * * * * * * * * * * * * * * * * * * * * * * * * * * * * * * * * * * * * * * * * * * * * * * * * * * * * * * * * * * *

There is also
* Sugar Falls: A Residential School Story
http://comicbookdb.com/issue.php?ID=367570
Image

* and Betty: The Helen Betty Osborne Story
http://www.portageandmainpress.com/product/betty/
"bright Cree teenager Helen Betty Osborne (1952-1971). Her brutal murder shocked her Cree community"

which, according to http://www.goodminds.com/betty-helen-be ... y-paper-ed , is a revised edition of The Life of Helen Betty Osborne: A Graphic Novel

http://www.goodminds.com/life-helen-bet ... -out-print

EDIT (2018 Jan) : Betty: The Helen Betty Osborne Story added to comicbookdb

As noted above, The Rebel: Gabriel Dumont reminded me that Louis Riel by Chester Brown could be a possibility:

Maybe "Louis Riel: A Comic-Strip Biography" (Tenth Anniversary Edition)
http://comicbookdb.com/issue.php?ID=293240
Image

Wikipedia says "Its success played a major part in gaining shelf space for serious graphic novels in mainstream North American bookstores."

Selected about eight main suggestions for June21's mainpage:

"Past IDW/Image/Dark Horse Book of the Day" slot:

Can't think of any other series by Dark Horse nor IDW ... nor Image.

EDIT: Oh, I suppose there is Shaman's Tears (haven't read it ... can't vouch for quality)

Shaman's Tears (1993) - #10

Scalped (2007) - #1 / "Indian Country, Part 1"
Cover Date: March 2007

maybe a cover of Apache Kid
Apache Kid (1950) - #19
Cover Date: April 1956
http://comicbookdb.com/issue.php?ID=129612

If not that, then how about an indy comic for the slot

More about
The Life of Helen Betty Osborne: A Graphic Novel (not yet added to comicbookdb)

Mentioned at Wikipedia
https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Helen_Bet ... references

"On December 2, 2008, a graphic novel entitled 'The Life of Helen Betty Osborne' was launched by The Helen Betty Osborne Memorial Foundation. The purpose of the graphic novel was to educate youth about racism, sexism and indifference." (ffrom that Wikipedia article)

Some details and cover image at
https://www.goodreads.com/book/show/757 ... ty-osborne (with book dated as 2008)

While both were written by David Alexander Robertson, each had a different artist.
Have a copy of 2015 book and the art by Scott B. Henderson, and published by Portage & Main Press (under their HighWater Press imprint) with 32 pages inside.
According to GoodReaders website, the 2008 book's art is by Madison Blackstone, and published by "Portage & Main Press", and is "36 pages" long.

edit: found a webpage at publisher's site
http://www.portageandmainpress.com/blog ... -pm-press/

EDIT: plus Emily's Choice: a Child Protection Story
co-published by Legal Services Society, BC and Healthy Aboriginal Network.
