Patreon?

Postby Chris » Fri Apr 24, 2015 3:39 am

Over the years, people have often asked me how they can contribute monetarily to the site and I generally would tell them to save their money and just buy more comics to fill out the database even better.

I also get the occasional complaint about the ads on our site and how it would be much better if we didn't have them (which I agree with).

With the rise of sites like Kickstarter and Patreon, I occasionally consider the possibility of using some sort of crowdfunding model to eventually get rid of the ads on the site.

If we were to do a Patreon, I'd want to offer milestones based on how much was being donated per month (aside from removing the ads from the site).

If we did something like that, what kind of milestones would people be interested in?

Not sure.
The only thing that comes to mind (at the moment) is switching to the (nicer) adverts of Project Wonderful.

Just had a thought, how about an getting an early milestone results in a guide to what format is which? (the drop-down menu that is part of "Adding an Issue")

I assume Manga means manga-size (which is why "Oh My Goddess" reprinted by Dark Horse have format set to "Standard Comic Issue")

I'm not sure what "Bookshelf" means (another word for "squarebound" binding ?)

I had an idea. There is big column of available whitespace at top of issue pages.

How about one milestone be the adding of table of contents to issue pages that have one or more stories in "Multiple Stories in this Issue" section.
(OPTIONAL: If there are more than 7 stories in the "Multiple Stories in this Issue" section, then the 8th link in the TOC could be "click here to jump to additional stories")

First image is screen-capture with red-box added to highlight the comicbookdb whitespace in question.
Second image is example of table of contents at comics.org.

One possible milestone (for a Patreon or crowd-funding) could be
adding the ability for example-person (while logged in with their username) to edit a problem report that example-person had recently filed.

After sending one Problem Report today I realized there was a typo. I had put #1 instead of #18.

{{My Problem Report
WAS "Please add Title Continuity field : Daredevil (2016) #1 continues from Daredevil (2014) #1."
WHEN the ending SHOULD HAVE BEEN "Daredevil (2016) #1 continues from Daredevil (2014) #18.}}

EDIT: Another possible milestone. Add Wikipedia field to Creator pages. In addition to the Website field, the "Twitter" field etc.

One possible milestone (for a Patreon or crowd-funding) could be
adding co-publishers to issue pages.

At the moment I'm adding The Manga Guide to the Universe,
which is "co-published by No Starch Press, Inc. and Ohmsha, Ltd."

(EDIT: and now have a library book titled "The Taj" that is "A Rubicon book published in association with Scholastic Canada" / "© 2007 Rubicon Publishing Inc." ... so I think it is also co-published.)

And Chris, I think you can feel free to give this thread sticky-status (ie. so it stays at the top of the forum) ... I assuming forum has sticky feature.

One possible milestone (for a Patreon or crowd-funding) could be
changing "Mature Content:" field
FROM "This entry contains mature content"
TO "This cover contains erotic content"

(because frankly ... "mature" is unclear. Is the dead Supergirl on a cover mature? (cover of Crisis on Infinite Earths (1985) - #7)

Because people keep flagging comics with Mature Content field, when there is no mature content on cover NOR on the webpage.

More discussion at "Mature content" thread of CBDb forum.

Another possible milestone (for a Patreon or crowd-funding) could be

adding possibility of "-2" (or "none") to price field.
Sometimes a publication doesn't have a price printed on them ... for whatever reason ... perhaps sometimes the (self-)publisher wants to be able to change the price on the fly (depending on how much money they need or whatnot).

Another example of a comic that apparently doesn't have price printed
http://www.comicbookdb.com/issue.php?ID=415573
database page says "Cover Price: Free"
but it is a "Color; Hardcover; 128 pages" and a Star Wars comic.
And presumably a 128page hardcover color comic is unlikely to be given away for free.

Another possible milestone (for a Patreon or crowd-funding) could be

Adding browsing for titles that don't start with "a" to "z", or "0" (zero) to "9".

http://www.comicbookdb.com/title.php?ID=57133 is for series
"Звёздные войны: Дарт Вейдер и тюрьма-призр (2015)"

And it doesn't appear in browsing for 3 http://www.comicbookdb.com/browse.php?s ... e&letter=3
nor browsing for З ( https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Ze_(Cyrillic) )

Actually nothing appears in the browsing for Ze_(Cyrillic) page
http://www.comicbookdb.com/browse.php?s ... ter=%D0%97

Also, trying to title search for "Звё"
results in "Search queries must be at least two characters long."

so it seems comicbookdb search can't title search for cyrillic letters.

EDIT: possibly related-thread viewtopic.php?f=2&t=1207
"Foreign letters are displayed wrong in some places."
