Josh Elder was born on May 17, 1980 in the small Midwestern town of Carmi, Illinois. A lifelong comic book fan, Josh’s first conscious memory is of watching Superman II in his Superman pajamas and then leaping off the furniture pretending that he could fly. Unfortunately he was better at takeoffs than landings and would often end up plummeting headfirst to the floor. Which explains a lot, really.
A graduate of Northwestern University with a degree in Film, Josh spent the next few years successfully avoiding gainful employment while flitting around the periphery of the comic book industry – first as a DC Comics intern and later as an associate editor for Wizard Magazine.
Josh finally “made it” in April of 2005 when his short story, Mail Order Ninja, won the grand prize in Tokyopop’s fifth Rising Stars of Manga contest. He scored a six-book deal as a result, and the first volume of Mail Order Ninja was released a little over a year later to great acclaim from his close friends and immediate family. Someone else must have liked it too, as Mail Order Ninja was soon picked up as a syndicated Sunday comic strip in over 45 newspapers worldwide — including the LA Times, Denver Post and Boston Globe. Josh has also entered into talks with the Chicago Children’s Theatre Company to adapt Mail Order Ninja for the stage for 2008-2009 season. More recently, he fulfilled a lifelong dream with the publication of his first issue (#36) of DC Comics all-ages superhero title The Batman Strikes.
Future projects include future volumes of Mail Order Ninja, a romantic comedy graphic novel for Platinum Studios entitled Love Bytes, and more issues of The Batman Strikes. In his spare time Josh also writes graphic novel reviews for the Chicago Sun-Times.
Josh lives in the small Midwestern town of Chicago, Illinois.
