In 1994 McDonnell created the comic strip MUTTS which now appears in over 700 newspapers in 20 countries. MUTTS has been described by Peanuts creator Charles Schulz as "one of the best comic strips of all time." McDonnell has received numerous awards for this strip, including the National Cartoonists Society Reuben for Cartoonist of the Year, Germany’s Max and Moritz Award for Best International Comic Strip, the Swedish Academy of Comic Art’s Adamson Statuette, five Harvey Awards for Best Comic Strip, two Genesis Awards from The Ark Trust (for promoting media awareness), the HSUS Hollywood Genesis Award for Ongoing Commitment, and a Sierra Club Award.
The MUTTS cartoons have been published in many books throughout the world. In 2005 McDonnell embarked on a children's book career, and his first children’s book, The Gift ofNothing, was a New York Times bestseller. That was followed in April 2006 by Art, a story about a boy name Art who makes Art. Last fall, Patrick released Just Like Heaven, which was hailed in a starred review by Kirkus as 'a meditation on the true nature of miracles'. This fall, his fourth children’s book, Hug Time, will be published. It features a kitten named Jules who goes around the world hugging endangered species. The Best of MUTTS will also be published in September 2007.
McDonnell’s website, muttscomics.com, promotes his animal-and-earth-friendly philosophy. Items sold exclusively on the site are made with organic materials and a tree is planted for every print sold. All his books are printed on recycled paper.
Patrick was selected by the US Marines to do the official 2006 Toys for Tots holiday poster and by the American Library Association to create a ‘Read!’ poster for 2007.
McDonnell is involved with many animal and environmental charities, and is a member of the Board of Directors for both The Humane Society of the United States and the Fund for Animals. The MUTTS characters appear on a New Jersey Animal Friendly license plate and on US postage stamps for HSUS. His website, muttscomics.com, supports many charities, including American Forests, HSUS, Kids for Tigers, and Toys for Tots. He and his wife Karen O’Connell are vegetarian and they live an ‘earth-friendly’ lifestyle with their dog Earl, and cat MeeMow.
