Cheetah possessed superhuman strength, allowing him to life somewhere around 8 tons. In addition, he could run at speeds of up to 75 miles per hour and possessed razor sharp claws. If Cheetah never regained his powers after they were lost, then the claws he wore at the end of his life were presumably part of his costume.
Sentry 459, an enormous robot constructed by the alien Kree, was retrieved from Earth by a Kree starship a number of years ago. Aboard the starship, the Sentry's previous programming and memories were erased. The Sentry was being reprogrammed when the starship was intercepted by S.H.I.E.L.D. missiles. The starship was forced to jettison the Sentry, which landed near Mexico City.
There the Sentry was found by Raoul Eschiverra, a bandit. When Eschiverra touched the Sentry, which had been primed for reprogramming, the Sentry duplicated Eschivera's own brain patterns in it's programming. Motivated by Eschiverra's hatred of Mexican authorities, the Sentry went on a rampage in Mexico City, which was stopped by Captain Mar-Vell.
The Sentry sent out an energy beam that somehow endowed Eschiverra's friend, the notorious thief Esteban Carracus, with superhuman strength and speed and even razor-sharp claws. Carracus named himself the Cheetah after the fastest mammal alive. Having strong leftist political learnings, the Cheetah decided to use his new power to strike out against United States capitalists, whom he believed exploited and oppressed the Mexican people.
With Sentry 459, Cheetah crossed the border and wreaked havoc at a number of factories in Texas. Both were opposed by Captain Mar-Vell. However, both the Cheetah and Sentry 459 fell under the mental domination of Ronan the Accuser, the renegade Kree high official who was being held prisoner in the starship from which the Sentry had been jettisoned shortly before. Ronan was using the Sentry and the Cheetah to distract Captain Mar-Vell's attention while he freed himself from captivity. Mar-Vell succeeded in defeating the Cheetah, the Sentry and finally Ronan as well. With the Sentry's destruction, Carracus lost his superhuman powers and fled.
However Carracus later resumed his costumed guise of the Cheetah and led an unremarkable criminal career in the United States. It is not known whether the Cheetah's superhuman powers ever returned. The Cheetah attended a meeting of costumed criminals at the so-called "Bar with No Name" in Ohio to discuss means of dealing with the threat of Scourge, the enigmatic assassin of costumed criminals. However, Scourge himself was present at the meeting, disguised as the bartender, and murdered the Cheetah and all of the other criminals who were present.
