Lucy Lane (Earth-1)

Search for 'Lucy Lane (Earth-1)' on Amazon

Lucy's Earth-1 biographical details aren't that different from her post-Crisis ones. She's the daughter of Sam and Ella Lane. She's the younger sister of Lois Lane, a cosmopolitan flight attendant, and a romantic interest of Jimmy Olsen. She also has a mischievous streak in her that's derivative of Earth-2's Susie Tompkins.

One of the ways Susie's tendency to fib manifests itself in Lucy is that she is merciless in her treatment of Jimmy. She's often revealed to be just "toying" with the young photographer. Indeed, one of the ways Superman was Jimmy's titular "pal" was that he would use his super-senses to in effect spy on Lucy's private conversations with Lois, in order to determine her true intent with respect to Jimmy.

Supergirl, too, tried to help the Lucy/Jimmy relationship along. There were a whole spate of stories in which Kara used her superpowers to "play Cupid" between the two. However, these machinations were usually so complex that Lucy could eventually unravel them. They often did more harm than good to the relationship.

In the entirety of the Earth-1 Jimmy/Lucy relationship, she was probably only genuinely in love with him once, and that was when they were both under magical influence.

Lucy became involved in with a criminal gang and was apparently killed while trying to run out the mob Superman's Girl Friend Lois Lane #120. Lucy returned in Superman's Pal Jimmy Olsen #158 but she couldn't be unrecognized. In Superman's Pal Jimmy Olsen #160 Lena Lawrence was really Lucy Lane, but her face was aged by a drug that saved her life. In Superman's Pal Jimmy Olsen #161 smoke from a fire in an experimental laboratory restored her features but her hair remained snow-white. Lucy began taking up a career in nursing.

While the basic conception of the pre- and post-Crisis Lucy Lanes is quite similar, the devil is in the details. In deference to the earlier, more innocent age in which this Lucy lived, there's no handicap afflicting her that isn't resolved by the end of the issue. There's no pre-marital sex. Instead, there's a ton of "Jimmy chases Lucy" stories.
