After losing the Magical Girdle to Hercules, she received bracelets from Aphrodite to wear as a constant reminder for submitting to a man's authority. If the bracelets on her wrists were ever bound together by chains by a man an Amazonian would lose her strength. Wonder Woman #1

Bio:
She like the other Amazons were created by Aphrodite. She is the Queen and leader of the Amazonians and was given a Magical Girdle by Aphrodite. With the Magical Girdle the women were able to defeat the men. The loses to the women enraged the god Mars who motivated Hercules to wage war on the women. Hercules lost a battle with Queen Hippolyte but used deceit to steal the Magical Girdle. She was seduced by Hercules and sex and had her Magical Girdle taken. Once again the Queen prayed to Aphrodite to release the women from the fetters of slavery. Aphrodite answered her prayer and received bracelets from which gave the Amazonians power to defeat the men and reclaim the Magical Girdle. The Amazonians led by Aphrodite fled by ship to Paradise Isle where only women are allowed.

She created a clay statue of a little girl. She prayed to Aphrodite for the statue to receive life. Queen Hippolyte named her Diana after the moon goddess mistress of chase.
