Miss Victory, a.k.a., Joan Wayne was first published in Captain Fearless #1 by Holyoke Comics back in August 1941. As Miss Victory the blue eyed, buxom, blonde battled crime and the Nazis during World War II. She was the first patriotic female superhero of her day.
Like most Golden Age comic book characters she had no formal origin story nor introduction. Though in issue 21 of Captain Aero it is explained that the great American soldier "Mad Anthony" Wayne, of the Revolutionary War, was an ancestor of hers. With that story it was also established that Miss Victory worked for the intelligence service.
In 1941 Joan was a stenographer in the office of the Secretary of Commerce in Washington, D.C. By the mid 1940's she had become a Captain, and a fighter pilot over the Pacific.
Joan's desire to help the war effort, led her to don the patriotic guise of Miss Victory: a tight fitting red white and blue costume with plunging neck line and V emblem across her DD-cup chest.
Due to not having an origin story, it was left unexplained as to how she was able to survive explosions, break free of ropes, knock down walls, or man handle several big powerful men at the same time. But is clear that in Captain Aero Comics she had Superhuman strength and limited invulnerablity.
She was called amazing, mighty, & powerful. And was always portrayed as a brave powerhouse of a women with a great deal of determination to see good vanquish evil. Yet sadly like almost all her costumed counterparts, this positive female role model vanished once the interest in superhero comics started to trail off after WWII.
The golden age Joan Wayne was last seen in Captain Aero #26, August 1946, in which the patriotic war hero had now gone into the crimefighting business, taking on gangsters in New York City.
