Omby Amby, also known as Wantowin Battles, is one of the tallest denizens of the Emerald City. When the Wizard ruled, he told Dorothy Gale and her friends that even he had never seen the Wizard, and could speak to him only through a screen. When the Wizard failed to get Dorothy home, the newly-crowned Scarecrow asked Omby Amby for assistance in the matter, who advised that Glinda might know a way for Dorothy to return home, which she did.
Although a soldier, he primarily stands around looking important and keeps his gun barrel stuffed with flowers, unless it becomes necessary to use it, and then he has to look for the powder and shot with which to load it. He was unable to do so when Jinjur invaded the city, and shaved off his distinctive green beard in shame.
Ozma made him the only private led forth by 27 officers on her first diplomatic mission to Ev. Omby Amby was the only private present, showed himself to be of greater worth than the cowardly generals, and was promoted to Captain-General.
He has retained a role of importance in Oz, and led Aunt Em and Uncle Henry on a tour when they arrived in Oz after being unable to pay their mortgage.
When his beard suddenly turned red, it was a too-late warning for the invasion of Skamperoo of Skampavia.
He would occasionally fill in for the Guardian of the Gates when the latter went to visit his cousin, Oopma.
