Ren Daggle, a Durlan, escaped his home planet of Durla and impersonated a human and traveled to Earth. During this time, Ren succumbed to the Yorggian fever, causing him to become stuck in his human form.

On Earth, Ren assumed the name René Jacques Brande and used his knowledge of Durlan technology to amass a fortune.

One day, R.J. was saved from an assassination attempt by Lightning Lad, Cosmic Boy, and Saturn Girl, inspiring him to provide financial backing for the Legion of Super-Heroes.
