Mon Mothma

Bio:
One of the leaders of the Republic Senate in the waning days of the Old Republic, she allied herself with her political enemy, Bail Organa, in order to oppose Palpatine's encroachments upon democracy. Forming a small cadre of like-minded senators ("The Delegation of 2000"), she presented a formal petition to Palpatine ("The Petition of the 2000"), which asked Palpatine to allow the Senate to resume its legislative oversight role, and to open peace negotiations with the Separatists. These seemed perfectly reasonable goals at the time, because, given what the Senators knew, the war, at that point, was militarily won by Republic forces--and Palpatine had pledged himself publicly to peace and democracy.

But these two requests were completely unreasonable to Palpatine, for whom the war was merely a sleight-of-hand act to give him ultimate power over the galaxy. As a result, Mon Mothma, Bail Organa and the whole of the Delegation were quickly marked as enemies of the Empire that would be created within days of their meeting with Palpatine.

Mon Mothma barely escaped Imperial forces, and managed to go underground. For around three decades following the events of Episode III, she grew the Rebel Alliance into a civil and military power sufficient to place Luke Skywalker in a position to defeat the Emperor.

When the business at Endor concluded, she presumably became the leader of the New Republic.

Notes:
According to various Dark Horse stories, Mothma's leadership of the New Republic is not presumption, but fact. Indeed, she is an important figure in much of the post-Episode VI fiction. The degree to which any of this can be taken as canonical fact, however, depends upon the degree to which one can accept the post-Episode VI continuity in light of the fact that it was mostly written before the release of Episode III--the "lynchpin" story of the entire Star Wars series.
