Hawkman (DC)(Post Flashpoint)(02 - Carter Hall)

Carter Hall reincarnates across time and space in a never ending cycle of being reborn. It was recently learned, that in his very first life, his initial existence, he was Ktar Deathbringer, and as a Deathbringer, he served the unseen force known as The Lord Beyond the Void. The Lord Beyond the Void required sacrifice after sacrifice in an effort to bring it from it's reality into Ktar's. Ktar and his most trusted general, Idamm, served for an untold amount of time (as they did not age) gathering sacrifices for The Lord Beyond the Void. Year after year, decade after decade, century after century they scavenged worlds. Decimating the populations by killing untold numbers and capturing and sacrificing even more. Deathbringer was in his name, and he lived up to it like no one before or since.

As time passed, Ktar began to feel remorse and regret for his actions. Planet after planet, life taken after life taken, it began to eat away at his very being until one fateful day, after another raid on Thanagar, he broke.

As what appeared to be the final sacrifice to bring The Lord Beyond the Void into his reality was prepared, Ktar revolted. He attacked Idamm and along with the captured Thangarians, started destroying the pillar that was the focus and the means of communication for The Lord Beyond the Void. Idamm returned the attack on Ktar and stabbed him through the chest with his spear, effectively defeating him for leadership of the Deathbringers, but it was too late. The pillar collapsed fell into the open portal that The Lord Beyond the Void was to have come through. As it collapsed, it took Idamm down with it.

Ktar effectively died, but did not yet pass into unlife. Instead, he was given a choice by unseen powers. He could accept death as his judgment and truly die, or he could choose life. He could choose to reincarnate over and over again, through time and space (effectively being able to exist as more than one being at the exact same time) until he had saved as many lives as he had taken as a Deathbringer. Each life he would save would bring him closer to his final death, but the way would not be easy. He was doomed to an endless cycle of mortality, with all the suffering and loss that such an existence would bring along with it. In addition, neither the Deathbringers nor Idamm himself were truly dead just imprisoned in a dark realm. A dark realm from which one day, they would be able to free themselves and begin their sacrifices anew as Ktar was unable to completely stop them.

And so the cycle of reincarnation started and to this day, as Hawkman, Carter has bravely fought over many lifetimes to be the hero he was always destined to be, never knowing just how many lives he needs to save to balance the scales.

The fully explained origin of Hawkman takes place in the Hawkman (2018) series. It's very interesting to note that in this series, which technically takes place in a Post-Flashpoint reality, many of Carter's past lives have been glimpsed, and some of those past lives take place specifically in Pre-Crisis and Post-Crisis realities. His new origin technically connects him to ALL previous versions of the character in his reality, including such previous version as Earth-1 Pre-Crisis Katar Hol, Post-Crisis Katar Hol, Post-Flashpoint Katar Hol, Khufu, Silent Knight, Nighthawk etc. etc. as well as newly created reincarnations such as Avion and Catar-Ol from Krypton.
