Flintheart Glomgold

Search for 'Flintheart Glomgold' on Amazon

The self-proclaimed "Second Richest Duck in the World", billionaire Glomgold is one of two of Scrooge McDuck's chief rivals. In American comic books, he's pretty much the only rival to Scrooge, these days. But in some European and Brazillian comic books, he shares that honor with John D. Rockerduck.

Flintheart is very similar to Scrooge, except that he is much more reclusive and alone. His basic thematic point seems to be to show what Scrooge would be like if he didn't have family. Indeed, he's often shown to have no one to talk him out of his darker impulses, and thus is sometimes seen intending to murder Scrooge.

He is also distinct in that he's South African, said to be a Boer from the province of Transvaal.

Unfortunately, Duck Tales, which used the character with some frequency, screwed this up. Because of fears of bringing up the then-hot button issue of Apartheid, Disney decided to back away from the South African origin for its TV version of the character. He was clearly Scottish in this version.

Since Duck Tales the character has been seen in comic work by a number of different artists, and a reconciliation between the two origins has been underway. He (or his parents) are basically now seen as having emigrated to South Africa from Scotland--thus allowing for the possiblity that a South African might have the Scottish accent heard in Duck Tales.

Though created by Barks, he was, like Rockerduck, used infrequently by his creator. Don Rosa, though, picked up on the character and has since used him with much greater regularity.
