Finney, whose first name was never given, was a thief. When the Doctor invited a group of scientists to his country cottage, Finney posed as one of the scientists in order to get close to the TARDIS. His aim was steal the time ship. Instead of getting particularly upset at Finney, however, the Doctor offered to take the thief on a trip ostensibly to show Finney how the ship was too complicated for anyone else to pilot.

Unfortunately for Finney, the trip brought the thief face-to-face with the Daleks. He showed great aplomb on the adventure, and was of great utility in helping the Doctor defeat the Daleks on their home planet.

Nevertheless, at the conclusion of the journey, the Doctor seemed to bid Finney goodbye. However, as Finney was never seen to actually exit the TARDIS, the door is left open to the possibility that the pair traveled together for a bit longer.

Although Finney appears in only one story, he makes at least two distinct trips in the TARDIS, and tackles the Daleks on their homeworld. This would seem to qualify counting him as a genuine companion.
