Maxwell Edison

Bio:
Max was a resident of Stockbridge, England. He was, to put it colloquially, a "UFO chaser". He prowled around the countryside looking for evidence of alien incursion. Regarded by the residents of his village as a crackpot, he encountered the Fifth Doctor when he was very much a lone crusader. Later, when the Eighth Doctor visited Stockbridge in his first comic adventure, Max' so-called "Bureau for Interplanetary Liaison (Stockbridge DIvision)" had grown to include Izzy, a similarly-minded 20-something girl.

Though the villagers in Stockbridge viewed him as crazy, in fact he was shown to be on the trail of actual alien incursion in his encounters with the Doctor.

He twice refused the Doctor's invitation to regularly travel in the TARDIS. The reasons for were never made particularly clear. Though he desperately wanted to be an ambassador, of sorts, between humans and aliens, he seemed to want them to come to him, rather than the reverse.

Notes:
Edison's status as a "companion" is disputed. However, he meets at least the "U.N.I.T. standard" of being a companion. That is, like the Brigadier and Sgt. Benton, he appeared in more than one story, knew the secret of the TARDIS, knew the Doctor's real planet of origin, and participated on adventures across more than one regeneration.
