Astrid Josefsen

Search for 'Astrid Josefsen' on Amazon

Astrid Josefsen was raised by her paternal grandfather, a dockworker, after her parents died. When her grandfather was forced into retirement at age 65, he became insanely violent. Astrid had been seeing an artist named Roger, and when he came by for a date, Josefsen threw him out the window. Roger landed on some people from a second story window, so no one was severely injured, but Astrid realized he was insane and tried to get him some help before he killed anyone, but no one could subdue him.

Grandpa Josefsen went on a rampage intending to kill a number of rock stars whom he felt "obliterated the concept of masculinity." Astrid fled by bus from San Francisco to the Everglades, accidentally encountering Eugene "The Star" Spangler, who was high on her grandfather's hit list.

Astrid attempted to warn Spangler, but he laughed at her. Josefsen, now dubbed "the Mad Viking" by the press for his choice of ancestral clothing, pursues Astrid into the swamp and finds Spangler, and soon plunges his axe through Spangler's heart. Astrid flees to a boarding house in Topequa, Florida, hearing Richard Rory on the radio, while her grandfather remains at large.

Josefsen joins forces with Olivia Selby in her crusade against the high school teachers. Astrid finds Richard Rory outside the high school and begs him for assistance. Richard replies that he thinks only she can persuade her grandfather to stop his rampage.

Astrid tells her grandfather that he raised her well and taught her to make her own decisions, and that the students of Citrusville should not be denied either. Her grandfather replies, "so what if I don't like it?" and slaps her in the face, his extraordinary strength knocking her to the ground, cracking her skull on the pavement.

Richard, in agony, and considering himself partially at fault, goes to her and realizes that she is dead, and even further upset that the townspeople don't seem to care and still side with a man who murdered his own granddaughter. Olivia Selby declares that Astrid was a freethinking witch whose mind was corrupted with filth and therefore deserved to die, causing Richard to leave Citrusville in disgust.

Created by Steve Gerber and John Buscema.
