Ellen gained unspecified powers by merging with the Man-Thing, K'ad-Mon, and the Nexus of All Realities. Her current level of ability is uncertain.

Born in rural Wisconsin, Ellen Brandt was a student who became involved with (and, according to some accounts, was married to) her womanizing professor, Ted Sallis. She accompanied Sallis to the Florida Everglades where he was hired by Dr. Wilma Calvin to participate in Project: Gladiator. On the way there, the two visited a carnival, and Madame Swabada showed Sallis's future as a monster, but Sallis overturned a table before much more could be revealed. Ellen betrayed Sallis to members of AIM, and after he was transformed into Man-Thing, in her terror, he burned half her face. She was found by SHIELD agents shortly thereafter and treated. A cosmetic surgeon named Leonard reportedly fell in love with her and corrected her face, but also reminded her that she was a traitor on the lam.

When next we saw her, her face remained burned, we learn she had spent five years in an asylum, and that she and Ted had had a son named Job adopted by a family named Burke. Drawn toward the Man-Thing some time after her release, she helped Man-Thing to repair the damage to the Nexus of All Realities caused by the events of Heroes Return, which involved a quest for pieces of the Nexus. The reassembly of the Nexus required her and Ted to both merge with the Nexus as a divine couple, while the spirit of K'Ad-mon, apparently the same spirit as Adam/Spyros, took over the Man-Thing's body, transformed it white, and spoke only in song. Sallis was capable of inhabiting this form when necessary, but this left Ellen in a precarious state and she needed to be rescued by Spider-Man.

As the Man-Thing has re-emerged in his original state, it is yet to be revealed what Ellen's current condition is.

Retconned as Man-Thing's wife as early as the original Official Handbook of the Marvel Universe as well as in the 1997 series.
