Martha 'Ma' Kent (01 - Earth-1)

Search for 'Martha 'Ma' Kent (01 - Earth-1)' on Amazon

Powers:
Made baby Kal-El's play suit from the blankets inside Kal-El's space rocket. When Clark was older she designed his Superboy costume.

Bio:
Retroactively, "Martha" was the name applied to Earth 1 Superman's human mother. Differentiated from Earth 2's "Mary" Kent in that she was the "adoptive" and not merely "foster" mother of the young Kal-El. Contrary to her Earth 2 counterpart, her death precedes that of her husband.

Somewhat tricky to tell in late 1940's and 1950's comics, prior to the official introduction of the multiverse, whether an issue featuring "Ma Kent" is using Mary or Martha, but a big tip-off is the presence of a costumed Superboy. If Superboy is present, it's definitely Martha. Because a display of uncostumed super powers is not always indicative of the Superboy persona, however, there will probably always be disagreement over the exact issue in which Martha makes her first appearance, but it's sometime in the early 1950s. Jonathan and Martha Kent expired within (apparently) days of each other, as a result of contracting the same rare disease while on vacation in the Caribbean.

ADMIN NOTE: Search for first use of the name "Martha" still under way. If you know, please assist.

Notes:
When Clark was small the Kent's lived on a farm but when Clark was old enough to attend school they moved to Smallville and opened a General Store. The courtship of Martha and Johnathan is shown in Superman #141.

First Appearance: None listed.
